Topic: Inflation

E&OE

Tim Wilson MP: Today the inflation data has revealed what Australians have been living. For years we have had a federal government that has been pouring debt petrol onto the inflation fire. And as a consequence inflation persists and is driving up costs for Australians. Until the government stops pouring debt-petrol onto the inflation fire, the cost of household groceries will continue to go up. The cost of the supermarket basket will go up. We will see continued upward pressure on electricity bills and Australians will increasingly confront a declining standard of living. What Australians need now is hope. They need hope for the future so that we can restore our way of life and protect our standard of living.

Because under this government, under the Albanese government, we have persistent inflation, fuelled by debt onto the inflation fire and the only response that Pyro Jim has had is to deny the nature of its existence or to pretend that he is not responsible for the key driver of inflation in the economy which is pushing up costs on Australian households.

One of the biggest and most concerning parts of this data is that the persistence of inflation has come as a result of the removal of government subsidies on energy, which were deliberately designed to deceive Australians on the true cost of their energy bill, to hide the dishonesty of the Labor Party in not honouring their $275 reduction in electricity prices. And once they got through their election and their subsidy, the full force of inflation is now being felt by Australian households. After an attempt to trick Australians that inflation is under control.

Pyro Jim continues to pour debt petrol onto the inflation fire, and Australians are paying higher prices as a consequence. We need prudent and responsible government. We need to end the corruption, and we need to make sure that there is a pathway to sustainability where we secure our standard of living and protect our way of life. And that will only come from a change in government.
