Congratulations on taking the first step to becoming a member of the 2026 National Youth Parliament!

150 motivated young Australians - one from every federal electorate - will be selected for a five-day residential program in Canberra in 2026.

You don’t need to have any experience - just a desire to contribute, learn and represent your community.

All young people who will be aged 16 - 17 and living in Australia in August 2026 are welcome to apply - regardless of background, education or experience.

Key Program Information:

  1. The National Youth Parliament program ('the program') is delivered in partnership between the Department of the House of Representatives and Y Australia ('The Y').
  2. The National Youth Parliament is a five-day (four night) residential program that will take place in Canberra in 2026. Dates are not yet confirmed, but it is likely that the program will take place from the 9-13 August (inclusive) 2026 or from 16-20 August (inclusive) 2026. You must be able to attend for the entire duration of the program, as well as the online training component (see below).
  3. Applications will close at 11:59pm on the 21st November, 2025. Applications submitted after this time will not be considered.
  4. You will be informed of the outcome of your application by the 2nd of March, 2026. If successful, you will be sent a welcome pack which will include your electronic letter of offer and a guardian consent form to be completed and returned by the 20th March, 2026.
  5. Successful applicants must be available to participate in online training organised by the Y, before the residential component of the program commences. Successful applicants may also attend community consultations with key stakeholders, engage with their community, and be the representative for the young people of their electorate.
  6. There will be significant public interest in this program, and we would love to share your story. Therefore, your guardian must provide written consent for the use of your recorded images/videos, photography, written submissions and creative works through the lifespan of the program. If you would like to discuss this requirement, please contact the National Youth Parliament team at [email protected].
  7. During the program, you will debate bills in a Chamber setting, meet with Members of Parliament at Parliament House, and participate in exciting civics and leadership activities.
  8. All essential costs - including travel to and from Canberra, accommodation, all meals and activities - are covered by the program.
